VAROD Sports and Exhibition Fiesta

Sports and skills can not be excluded from the people with disability. VAROD created an opportunity for the differently abeld people, having “VAROd Sports & Exhibition Fiesta- 2010” at VAROD rehabilitation center, Pambaimadhu, Vavuniya, on the 25th, 26th June. Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph D. D, the Bishop of the Diocese of Mannar graced the final day of the fiesta as the Chief Guest. Many religious dignitaries, eminent people form Government sector and NGOO also graced the occasion.
All the athletic events were designed in considering the physical and mental status, age, gender of the beneficiaries. The Sports commenced with the Olympic tourch which was carried by four differently abled persons: a sight impaired, mentally retarded, Wheel chair persons and a person with clutches. In this manner fast walk with the support of elbow crutches, race for the short leg ones, race by race by amputees with artificial limbs, wheel chair race, running to the ring bell by the sight impaired were held as track events. Aiming, pot breaking, putt shots were held as field games, while draft, chess, and carom were held as indoor games. The certificates and prizes were awarded to the winners by the Bishop and the Special Guests. Nearly 162 people participated in these events.
At the same time, the handicraft exhibition made by the VAROD inmates in the vocational therapy was also placed in the exhibition for the show and sales. It was more colorful for this fiesta. All the beneficiaries were very much enthusiastically involved in the two days events excelled their talents making the audience amazed. The beneficiaries were also inspired and redeemed themselves from the gloomy experience by staging the drama titled “Vazhvom” (tho;Nthk; – Lets live). This drama paved the way to the affected people to live with the hope and confidence in the rest of life time.
“VAROD” has been rendering the multi-faced humanity services in various ways to t he people with special need for one year. It is noted that this fiesta was organized to mark the first anniversary of VAROD.
