‘VAROD’ Sports, Exhibition & Aesthetic Fiesta – 2011

The VAROD held Sport, Exhibition & Aesthetic Fiesta for the persons with disabilities (PWDs) at Pampaimadhu, Vavuniya, on May 20-22, 2011. The three days were coloured by the active presence of nearly 400 persons with different disabilities form different places in the districts of Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mulaittivu.
Rev. Fr. Albert Arulraja CMF, the Executive Director of VAORD inaugurated the event with warm words. The main intention of this fiesta is to pave the way to create opportunity for the PWDs to integrate themselves with the society by respecting the disable rights and exposing their talents. All the necessary arrangements were undertaken by the staff of VAROD with the collaboration of the target group under the direct guidance of Rev. Fr. Albert J. Arulraja CMF, Executive Director, VAROD.
In the first day, the aesthetic competition was held for the children with different disabilities. The children actively took part in the Speech, Signing, Essay writing, poem writing and drawing competitions. the drama competition witnessed the creative power within the PWDs. The Second day was for the different field events. Mr. V. Subramaniyam, Resident of ORHAN, Vavuniya inaugurated the second day with his speech.
Dr. S. Suthakaran, Actg. Medical Superintendent, General Hospital, Vavuniya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. And Rev. Fr. A. Yavis, Director, HUDEC (Kili & Mullai) and Rev. Fr. T. L. Rohan Dominic CMF, Regional Superior, Claretian Congregation, Sri Lanka were the Guests of Honour for this fiesta. The priests and nuns from different congregations, representatives from govt. and non-govt organizations, parents and well wishers also took part in the events.
There are various indoor and outdoor games were held to give the chance for all types of PWDs to take part. All the competitors were participated in the games with the enthusiasm. All together 250 competitors took part in the event from three districts i.e Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu
At this occasion, the handicraft exhibition and sales also decorated the event more colorfully. It is notable that the book named ‘ENNAM’ was also released in the final day by the Chief Guest. The purpose of this publication is to make awareness in the community regarding the disabilities and its issues. The certificates and awards were given away to the winners with sponsorship of different trade centres and banks in Vavuniya District.
